MORE LIKE STULTIFYING

Watched barely entertaining, long forgotten 1991 soap opera spoof DELIRIOUS tonight. Time could have been better spent watching a real soap opera instead of this slapdash TOOTSIE wannabe. Emma Samms and David Rasche are fun, but the damned thing feels like notes for a first draft.

Are you going to dissect the other soap spoof of 1991, SOAPDISH: a film that was, let's face it, a low point in the careers of everyone that was in it. (Sally Field should have used her NORMA RAE skills and organized a union against SD.)

I am not going to dissect SOAPDISH because then I would have to watch it again! I saw it in a college course on popular culture and remember 3 things about it:
1) SOAPDISH thinks humor means PEOPLE SCREAMING AT EACH OTHER!
2) The big plot to undo Sally Field is to have her character in the soap kill an angelic homeless person. Puh-leeze -- folks in ATWT have killed people left and right and gotten away with it every time!
3) There is one genuinely funny scene where Sally Field and Whoopi Goldberg go to the mall and Whoopi pretends to recognize Sally "You! You're in my stories!" (My memory of that is probably funnier than the actual scene!)

I think the brilliant TOOTSIE is to blame for these soap opera parody movies. They were probably in gestation from the time of TOOTSIE and tried to replicate TOOTSIE, only they left out the laughs, acting and heart.
