TALA ASHE ON LOST ISLAND?

The series finale of LOST tonight had me blubbing away at the reunion of Desmond and Penny. I asked the equally tear stained Employed Boyfriend why we felt so much for characters we see so little of. He replied "Well, isn't that the way with Noah and Luke on AS THE WORLD TURNS?" Interesting...do we emotionally invest more in things we don't have all the time? Oh, and LOST had my third sighting of Alan Dale in a week!

I will say Tala Ashe needs to send her reel to LOST ASAP. As one of the few truly multicultural shows on air, LOST would be an ideal place for Tala. She can be Sayid's new love interest or the daughter of his dead lover, or she could play another role. After meeting Tala at the ATWT fan club luncheon, where I saw how incredibly different she is from Ameera, I truly realized what an amazing, underappreciated actress she is. Good luck on future roles, Tala, and shame on ATWT for letting go the most interesting young female on their show.

Luke and Noah's scenes were intensely dramatic today, even with the intrusion of the INTURN contestant in the form of a naked, busking sailor. GUIDING LIGHT should take notice of how to film outside broadcast scenes that enhance the action and are also colorful and audible.

SLEEPER

I didn't get up until 1 PM today! And I went to bed early last night - I only stayed up to 3 AM! (You, too, can keep these hours if you are unemployed.)

ONE LIFE TO LIVE easily beat DAYS OF OUR LIVES today. Watching the legal proceedings against Todd was very, very satisfying. I'm not sure if I love to hate Todd or just plain out hate him, but I can't wait to see his own daughter and wife rip into him.

DOOL was placing too much emphasis on the GOOD WILL HUNTING ripoff story, which I normally enjoy hugely because of the focus on Nick and Max. But today the focus was not on the chemistry between those two, but actually on the work done for the environment. Yawn. At least we had AJ and Nicole plotting together, which was fun. And whoever does the casting for DOOL is smart. Those a-hole buddies of Daniel's were such recognizably real scummy suits. Why would Daniel hang out with these guys instead of some surfing buddies?

Oddly, GUIDING LIGHT held my attention more today than GENERAL HOSPITAL. I liked seeing Reva and I liked seeing Bill (especially that shot of him drugged out and lying on his bed in his robe -- oh sweet Jesus I just said I liked a directorial choice on GUIDING LIGHT!) However, when Cassie slumped her head against her paperwork in despair I did hope that she was suffering from a brain aneurism and had suddenly died. No such luck. Also, seeing the scene where Reva and Josh see the actors acting out their lives would have been more powerful with the use of a vintage clip or two, but I reckon we will never see a vintage clip on GL again due to the look of video clashing with the look of Ellen Wheeler's camera phone. To end on a positive note, it was a great touch having Bill using Rafe's crime to bring the Spauldings down. We should never forget that Rafe has ruined his entire life by shooting Jeffrey! This can't be swept under the carpet!

GH was really misjudging their mob storylines today. I don't think viewers care about who controls the mob or the Zaccara's plans to take over. The mob stuff should just be an excuse to have strong characters interact with each other, not the main focus of the show. GH should be character driven, not plot driven, and certainly not driven by plots that should only function as wallpaper.

WILL LUKE SAVE NOAH?

...from being attacked from the Colonel? I have no evidence to support this, but what if the next obstacle to Luke and Noah's happiness is Luke killing Colonel Mayer in self defense? I hope they don't do that because every soap needs a good villain and there's no one I love to hate more than the Colonel!
Was that a sneaky shout out to the fans in yesterday's episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS? Lily says she'll "nuke" the leftovers instead of warming them up or putting them in the microwave...hmmm. What next, will Brad and Katie be reading the blog of The Unemployed OAKDALE NOW Viewer?

GIVING 10 YEAR OLDS BEER

..was the laugh out loud highlight of my soap viewing today! (So far, anyhoo.) ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Brody is an inspired creation. It totally makes sense that he would think being a father is like hanging out with your buddy -- the game, pizza, and beer even if your buddy is actually your son and is ten! I thought Shayne saluting his Dad at the end was a cute touch that spoke volumes. Shayne loves his newly discovered Dad and Brody thinks it's a sweet deal having to be Shayne's Dad. When the truth comes out eventually, Brody might actually be upset. Good lord -- I think we have character development here!

OLTL fought with DOOL for my attention and won again, for the amazing way OLTL keeps so many balls in the air and so many stories and characters intersecting. Yet DOOL still had lots to enjoy. I could watch Ava and Nicole get drunk and cruise bartenders for a whole hour. Again, I have to wonder if Ava is sticking around. Or if the writers are just pairing her with fun characters in order to tempt Tamara Braun to stick around!

I did see the end bit of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL today before my hour of OLTL vs. DOOL. B&B is working overtime to convince me that Rick and Taylor are a fun, convincing couple by showing their pillow talk. I would like to see a scene where Taylor does indeed take Rick to a psychiatrist's party where drunk therapists argue over who's craziest. Don't tell HBO -- they'll make a series of it ala IN TREATMENT and TELL ME YOU LOVE ME and I don't think my cable provider can handle another HBO show about therapy! To go off on a tangent, I wanted to get into both of those HBO series but IN TREATMENT required too much committment from me (HA! like therapy itself!) and TELL ME YOU LOVE ME was just torture to watch, with completely unlikable people boring me with their heterosexual crap. TMYLM should have had a gay or lesbian couple in it, just to show that not all couples are a) hetero and b) engaged in manipulative man/woman power struggles.

Getting back to the soaps, GENERAL HOSPITAL ruled my world today by largely featuring Spinelli and Maxie! I feel so protective of Spinelli. Hearing how Sonny pushed him and gave him a concussion and seeing Mac be mean to him made me want to wallop Sonny and Mac with my Retired Mom's purse. And having Sam be nice to Spinelli made me like her more! Or maybe I'm just sympathetic to Sam because she, too, is unemployed.

OMG, I'm going to say something nice about GUIDING LIGHT! I love it that Olivia told Natalia "No, I am not giving you money to find your dumbass son who shot my huisband." With no Gus or Rafe, surely Natalia's days are numbered? That must be a relief to the actress who plays her, who is actually very pretty but you'd never know it looking at her through Ellen Wheeler's camera phone. I also enjoyed seeing some Alan. His reaction to Rafe running away was so real, I actually felt sorry for Alan. Ron Raines can do anything!

BANG BANG

OK, I'm back to the world of soaps! DAYS OF OUR LIVES surprised me with the notion that crazy-now-sane Ava would hire EJ as an attorney. I thought Tamara Braun's role was short term, but this looks like she's sticking around. I hope she does! Tamara is an ace actress and DOOL needs to explore further the sparks I felt between Ava and Max at their meeting at Shawn's grave.

GUIDING LIGHT is horrible, but I watch it out of some masochistic need of mine. Or maybe I just want to rag on it in this blog. We had another horrendously directed episode, with scenes crashing into each other without rhyme or reason. Without any transitional shot, we see Rafe run from the room after shooting Jeffrey to being in another room that looks like a supply closet in GL's Peapack offices. The effect was jarring and the film grammar incomprehensible. I had no idea where Rafe was. This led to confusion as everyone went searching for Rafe, with Daisy finding him and going "I knew you'd be here." Um, where's "here"?
Also crap was Harley going on the run with Rafe. I know Beth Ehlers is leaving, but her last air date is June 23 so why is Harley abandoning her three biological children, two of whom are very young and one teenage fuckup, to go on the run with Rafe, who she is not related to? So what if he's Gus' kid? Harley and Rafe never seemed that tight before. And don't get me started on the notion that Gus was a crooked cop or else I'll be here all night.
Full marks for the use of the acoustic version of ONLY LOVE during the end, however. It helps detract from the camera-phone visuals.

The Employed Boyfriend and I watched the first half of AS THE WORLD TURNS before collapsing in a lengthy ate-too-much-pizza nap. I can't believe how awful Lisa was. Keep your mouth shut, woman! Margo is already freaking out, which is nerve wracking to watch. Casey is so damn hot. He can kiss my neck and ask for advice about his crimes anytime. My ears perked up at the mention of Adam. Can ATWT be bringing him back, preferably in the person of Eric William Morris? Sage was a little brat to Parker, but it made me laugh out loud. Mick Hazen nailed the sullen awkwardness of trying to keep your first date secret from your mom. I also enjoyed seeing Lucinda and a NEW SET for Lily! Holy crap! Did Martha Byrne leaving free up a buttload of discretionary funds?

KISS KISS

Dragged my ass out of bed at 12:15 to watch the last part of THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. Ummmm...wouldn't getting Kathy Hilton to be part of your webzine actually be a bad thing? As in "Look how tacky and low class RESTLESS STYLE is!" Can you tell I wasn't thrilled by Mama Hilton's recent appearance on the show?

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL was fun. I am loving Pam! I hope when Marcus' dad is revealed that he becomes a love interest for Pam. Wouldn't that do a number on Donna? I also enjoyed Phoebe's mature response to the typically almost-incestual stuff going on betwen her mom and her ex-boyfriend. I still don't buy Rick and Taylor as a couple, but I enjoy the fall out of their relationship.

Caught the last minute of ALL MY CHILDREN. Julia dying and crying. Helicoptor. Crap CGI. They'll be lucky if I tun in before Beth Ehlers joins.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE and DAYS OF OUR LIVES battled for my attention and the winner is...OLTL! Marcie is so going to hold onto Tommy and never let him go. As well she should. Todd became even slimier -- paying someone to sneak a baby seat into his wrecked car?? That is low.

Gotta go -- got some personal drama to tend to.

ALAN DALE SIGHTING #2!

...in the episode of TORCHWOOD I rewatched tonight, and the reliable Alan brought some shades of grey to what could have been a standard baddie role. I do wonder what was the role that helped him make the leap from suburban Dad on NEIGHBOURS to evil suit in pretty much everything he's done since?

My soap viewing was haphazard today. I should state the rules of this blog. I will only blog about the soaps I see that day on that day -- I won't blog about them tomorrow. EXCEPT if it's a Nuke episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS, which is always so important it takes blogging priority over everything! I will not blog about every soap every day; I drift in and out of shows all the time and am only devoted to AS THE WORLD TURNS. I sometimes only watch parts of an episode of a soap or have two soaps fighting in the same time slot for my attention. I will attempt to honestly chronicle my soap viewing. I hope you find my different perspective refreshing!

That said, I only saw a bit of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and a bit of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL today due to an ill advised attempt to do some Memorial Day shopping. What kills the shopping is the feeling that "I'm unemployed. Do I really need this?" The answer is almost always NO. I do not need to own SQUARE PEGS on DVD. Nor should I buy Region 1 DVDs of DOCTOR WHO when Region 2 DVDs are much more inexpensive online. However, I did need to buy the new issue of CBS SOAPS IN DEPTH, which had a great spread on the ATWT Fan Club Luncheon, which was simply the best fan event I've ever been to. Of the bit I saw of Y&R today, I thought Joshua Morrow was doing a good job of underplaying Nick's memory recovery, though in reality I think Nick would be curled up in a fetal ball screaming.

After an alcohol fueled lunch, The Employed Boyfriend and I watched ATWT. We then fell into a long boozy nap, where I dreamed I was friends with Billy Magnusson, Marnie Schullenberg and Dylan Bruce! How pathetic is that??!

Apres le nap and one invigorating cup of tea later, I watched the pilot episode of GOSSIP GIRL. One nice scene shot outside The Metropolitan Museum Of Art. Serena's suicidal gay brother is a cutie, but suicidal gays are so passe. No more victims, please. I hope we see Blair's gay Dad and boyfriend. And why hasn't anyone thrown date rapey Chuck off a building or through a skylight? Otherwise, absolutely nothing of interest here. If this wasn't in HD, I'd give it a miss.

You know you love me

THE KINGDOM OF THE EX-SOAP STAR

I was jerked out of the stultification of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL by a brief appearance by the strangely ubiquitous Alan Dale! Alan Dale has appeared in everything from TORCHWOOD and LOST to UGLY BETTY and THE O.C. but will always be Jim Robinson from the Australian soap NEIGHBOURS to me. His death in that usually cozy soap was completely horrific. Jim dies of a heart attack as his merciless wife looks on, doing absolutely nothing to help him. It was a daring way to end a beloved long running soap character. Seeing Alan Dale always reminds me of his final NEIGHBOURS episode, no matter what else he does!

FROM HIGH DEF TO NO DEF

Or, from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS to GUIDING LIGHT!

I managed to get up at noon to watch the last half hour of Y&R. Dang, that show sure is pretty in HD. Even the tea packets behind Amber's head are colorful and sparkly. I don't want to rag on the shorties, but I have to say Noah is so fake and unnatural compared to the brilliantly authentic children on AS THE WORLD TURNS. Maybe if they gave Noah a friend he wouldn't seem so out of place hanging around adults all the time?

Hypnotized by the HD signal, I stayed tuned to CBS for THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. I like but am unintentionally amused by the Donna/Marcus story, which is a high class spin on SECRETS AND LIES only with a son instead of a daughter. I think shortly after that film was released in 1996, ALL MY CHILDREN got there first with Opal and Adrian. So I'm wondering, why hasn't any soap had the courage to full out rip off that fantastic film? I want to see a trashy white mom/high class black daughter now! Steal from the best, soap writers!

I only managed to catch the last minute of AMC but while I was away all hell broke loose! There was crap CGI! There was a helicoptor! There was Jesse launching himself at the helicoptor! There was Dixie's ghost trying to shield Tad from bullets! I wonder if this will happen every time I depart from my normal soap routine. Next time I watch Y&R and B&B instead of AMC, I'll catch the end of AMC and zombies will be eating Colby and Dre. Badly CGIed zombies, of course.

Can you tell I don't like CGI in soaps? Soaps should be filmed theatre, not wanna be films. DAYS OF OUR LIVES had the best plane crash I've ever seen on soaps because they focused on the drama inside the plane, not on trying to show the plane in CGI.

Speaking of DOOL, that show and OLTL were really neck and neck trying to win my full attention today. DOOL had EJ interacting with Chloe, which was fun, and EJ/Sami/Lucas yelling at each other, which is damn good drama.

However, OLTL wins for two reasons. One, for the healthy displays of Man Flesh. John Paul Lavoisier in nothing but a towel and/or a skimpy bathing suit. For the entire episode. And Brody cleans up real good, yesssir.
Two, the impressive way all the stories interacted with each other to produce an edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger. I know Melissa Gallo is leaving OLTL, so does this car crash spell the end of Adriana? And will little Tommy now be back in Marcy and Michaels' custody? Do they save his life? And will Todd finally pay for his crimes against every person in Llanview? How dare OLTL have a rerun Monday!!!!!!

Overwhelmed by OLTL, I surfed aimlessly between GENERAL HOSPITAL and GL. I liked the scene in GH where Claudia and Nicolas bonded over people trying to kill them all the time. Maybe Constance Towers can be lured back to fight with Claudia? That could actually make Claudia sympathetic, for once!

GL is a trainwreck. I am amazed that something so badly directed is even allowed to air. The cut between Harley escorting Rafe out of the fortune tellers' place to Rafe running away from Harley in some woods was jarring and confusing. The way the shots of people talking (Cyrus and Daisy, Mallett and Dinah) go from close-ups to long shots is just a bad way of shooting dialogue between two characters. Hasn't the director ever seen a medium two-shot? Or is the direction of GL entirely done now by Ellen Wheeler as she waves her camera phone at the actors and runs up to them and then runs away, frantically yelling "DON'T MOVE! MOVE NOW!"

EVEN THE KIDS ROCK!

A few posts ago I stated that AS THE WORLD TURNS has the best cast on daytime. I was proved right today as the kids of ATWT delivered astonishing performances in a surprisingly powerful episode. That scene between Liberty and Janet, the look on Parker's face when he's telling Jack how just once he wants everything to go right, the look on Faith's face when she told Holden she wants to go home....color me astounded. Julie Pinson was so good in the scene where she smacked Liberty. I actually gasped and was incredibly moved as Julie went through a lifetime of emotions in one scene. Wow. ATWT made great drama out of something as mundane as a school dance. With one slap that felt like a bullet to the stomach.
And judging by tomorrow's preview, it's not going to let up! Nuke In New York! And has Colonel Mayer killed Ameera? I hope not because Tala Ashe is too good to be wasted.

I watched half of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS on Soapnet tonight. Why does Soapnet not broadcast in HD? Y&R looks gorgeous in High Definition, but in regular Def it's just run-of-the-mill. Plus I had to put up with annoying onscreen promos for RELATIVE MADNESS, which you know must be crap because if those are the best quips in the commercial, how bad must the actual show be? Anyhow, Y&R was also moving and I like that Cassie's death is remembered each year, because that is realistic and, this year, especially dramatic because Nick's amnesia meant he doesn't remember her death! Yikes! I am going to try and get my unemployed ass out of bed earlier so I can watch Y&R in beautiful High Def on CBSHD. Wish me luck! (Or if the show is usually bad, wish me sweet dreams.)

GUNS AND YELLING..

pretty much sums up my soap viewing today!

I woke up from my drunken (but hangover-less) stupor at 12:45 PM!!! So I only got to see the last 5 minutes of ALL MY CHILDREN. Shoot Sledge Hammer, Jesse, before he shoots..SPOILER SPACE

JULIA!!!! AND KILLS HER!!!

END OF SPOILER SPACE

DAYS OF OUR LIVES and ONE LIFE TO LIVE continue to fight for my attention. DOOL was winning today, thanks to explosive scenes between Sami/Lucas/Marlena/John and EJ/Nicole. I am so loving Drake Hogestyn since he came back; I have promised The Employed Boyfriend to let him know when that memory disc comes back in John's possession. Notice how a good show can excite the interest of a casual viewer?
OLTL bored with Antonio/Ramsey/Talia, but scored with Nora and Lindsay. Like Emily and Margo on AS THE WORLD TURNS, these characters have History with a capital H and it is damn satisfying viewing when that card is played!
I also dug Sean telling Todd he has quit and only takes orders from Blair now and would not come back to work for Todd. You tell him, Sean! Any scene where an asshole boss gets taken down a peg is an automatic rave from me!

GENERAL HOSPITAL was much improved today. Maxie! Spinelli! Diane! Max! Kelly (whose portrayer accidentally threw bread at me and The Employed One last November at the Wood Ranch in Los Angeles)! All these characters are FUN and add much needed energy to the otherwise sluggish proceedings. Of course I loved the scene where Kate tried to reason with the increasingly mental Carly. Kate is so dignified in the face of lunacy; I am going to take lessons from her for my next job interview. While I find Carly intensely aggravating, I believe this is the show's intent and I just want to say Laura Wright does a great job as Carly. She holds her own with Maurice Benard and their cliffhanger scene today was fraught with tension.
And I've never watched SEX AND THE CITY and never will, because who needs it when you have Diane and Kate together? Put them in the same room with Alexis and Maxie and watch the show write itself!

DRUNKENLY BLOGGING ABOUT NOAH & LUKE!

One of the side benefits of being unemployed is getting drunk on a weekday night! I had a margarita before AS THE WORLD TURNS today and some chardonnay afterwards! (Yes, I am a lightweight!)

Luke and Noah's scenes today were intensely dramatic, capped off with KISS #5! This was more of a we-will-get-through-it-kiss than yesterday's sweet-and-sexy kiss. It was fantastic to see! And how great is it that we can compare Nuke kisses from subsequent days??? I think this is Step One in making a gay kiss something run of the mill and just as natural as a straight couple kissing, and I applaud Chris Goutman/Jean Passanante/whomever for making this happen!

What is also smashing is how good the rest of the show was! Billy Magnusson is a real find as Casey. The camera loves his body and so does The Employed Boyfriend, who would leave me for Billy in a second. But then he would see my blog and come crawling back, so I would win in the end. BWA HA HA. Can you believe Billy's reading of the line "And it isn't HARD ON ME??"
I love crazy Sophie! I think ATWT has finally figured out what to do with this character; she's not an ingenue for all the hot guys to fall in love with, she's a nut!!!
I love Colleen Zenk Pinter! She is so gorgeous I say find some way to reform Colonel Mayer and make him Bab's love interest. C'mon, blame his psychosis on a brain tumour -- it worked for Jana on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and Jonathan on ALL MY CHILDREN!

Ok sobering up now. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode and the School Dance From Hell.

NOT SCOTT BRYCE

Hunt Block is the ex-Craig on OLTL. Sorry if I confused anybody in the post below!

BEFORE I WATCH NOAH AND LUKE TONIGHT..

I have to give a shout out to vanhansis.net, who are saying very nice things about me. Feel free to leave comments on this site, guys, it's fun! And keep up all the good work on vanhansis.net -- the ONLY soap actor site I lurk on daily!

Actually, before The Employed Boyfriend gets home I'm going to write about today's other soap viewing, otherwise it will be wiped from my brain by what I'm sure will be a fab episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS. I was woken up by a random phone call at 12:15 PM today and thank God I was or else I would have missed Angie and Jesse's wedding! Dudes, when Darnell Williams cries the whole world cries with him. Debbi Morgan looked radiant, and the whole thing was nicely directed. And I even liked NeYo, whom I have never heard of before. Great stuff all around.

I was unable to decide whether to watch ONE LIFE TO LIVE or DAYS OF OUR LIVES, so I channel surfed between both. Lucas' return home on DOOL was intense!! I was rooting for Sami/EJ, but now I'm not so sure...and isn't it great to have a soap triangle where you like both guys?? That's good writing, people.
OLTL was a mixture of inspired -- David bound, gagged and covered with a horse blanket, yet still quipping away -- and uninspired -- Antonio/Talia/the guy who used to play Craig on ATWT. C'mon, OLTl, work harder to lure me away from DOOL!

GENERAL HOSPITAL continues to sink into glumness, briefly relieved by the giant stuffed monkey Patrick gave Robin and Luke/Tracy. But I'm starting to pick up the TV GUIDE to read while GH is on, and that's not a good thing. Tomorrow looks more fun, because I saw Maxie in the preview. And Lulu deserves some kind of judgement being passed on her, because her one track Johnny Zaccarah obsessed mind is friggin' annoying. Lucky should have elaborated on his comment to her today about how it's interesting that Johnny is the first thing she thinks about. I used to love Lulu when she was with Dillon Quartermaine and I applaud GH for allowing her to get an abortion without any conservative moralizing. But she is in danger of becoming a character I want to see Maxie do mean things to. And I loved a month or so ago, when Kate called Lulu a self centred bitch. Wake up Lulu!!!!

NOAH AND LUKE! Does anything else matter?

I was all set to start off this entry by writing about how hot EJ and Sami's lovemaking was on DAYS OF OUR LIVES but then The Employed Boyfriend and I watched AS THE WORLD TURNS and...well, does ANYTHING I watched today compare to the sweet sexiness of Noah and Luke ALMOST making love? Nope. Gay Kiss #4 was brilliant! And we get more Nuke action tomorrow! I don't know if I can focus on any other soaps!
This show is such a positive influence on me. No sooner had I watched today's episode than I was whipping up a pasta dinner for The Employed One, ala Juicy Janet and Brad. Wait a minute-- Janet's unemployed, and Brad is working. My life is a soap!!!

GENERAL HOSPITAL was well written and acted today, but awfully dour, even though there were some Luke/Tracy shenanigans. I was hoping Spinelli and Maxie would show up and relieve me of the air of tragic gloom that permeated Port Charles today. I did enjoy all the scenes with Kate. She is so intelligent and willing to fight for what she believes in. I like soap heroines with a brain and good fashion sense. And on a more shallow note, I was digging the way Kate's hair frizzed out so stylishly in the rain.

DOOL had the aforementioned EJ/Sami hotness, which was strung out for the whole episode in a pleasing fashion. I think Max and Nick could solve all their math nerd problems by having sex for a whole episode as well, but the chances of that happening are slim. I love seeing them together, though, and I hate physics. I failed the Physics Regents by one point my Junior year of high school, and had to restudy all on my lonesome to pass it the next year to graduate. And where was my hot bartender/ex-race car driver or strangely attractive geek tutor to help me with this? NOWHERE. That is why soaps are such potent fantasies.
Is it just me who has never bought Abe and Lexie as a couple? He is old and boring. She is young and fabulous and was in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES. They are clearly not compatible.

Which brings me neatly to the wonderful Angie and Jesse on ALL MY CHILDREN, who are together because they both rock. I'm looking forward to more rocking couples on AMC when Beth Ehlers joins. GUIDING LIGHT made a HUGE mistake in splitting up Beth's and Ricky Paull Goldin's characters. Now that Ellen Wheeler has lost both performers to AMC, I bet she's crying over her camera-phone, which is seemingly used to shoot GL nowadays.

From AMC to GOSSIP GIRL!

Today has been somewhat woozy for me, since I've had the stress of a job interview this morning (yay me!) combined with horrendous heat (95 degreees in Los Angeles -- gaaaaaah) and resultant dehydration and unconsciousness. Still, I managed to cram in loads of soap.

Back from my interview in time to catch the last half hour of ALL MY CHILDREN. This is becoming a regular habit with me; will there ever be a day I actually see a whole episode without resorting to Soapnet reruns and their obnoxious onscreen logos? (RELATIVE MADNESS can go kiss my ass. But that is a topic for another day...) Anyhoo, Angie and Jesse must be one of the most realistic couples in daytime with their little jokes and longtime ease with each other showing in every scene. Rest of the show -- meh, not so interesting.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES was certainly interesting today. Sami forgave EJ for raping her and they promised to never mention that night again AND THEN SLEPT WITH EACH OTHER. Is this realistic? Hell no. Is this a bit offensive? Sorta yeah. Is this good for the show? Yep, because I want to see Sami and EJ together and the rape story was crap and best forgotten. I think I don't mind rewriting soap continuity if you're cleaning up past writing teams' mistakes.
I can watch Nick and Max act out their GOOD WILL HUNTING schtick for an entire episode. Please, DOOL writers, give Nick a love interest NOW! I say Morgan will be a fun match; more sparky than her and Philip and Morgan did show interest in Nick's alternative fuel source while Chelsea and Steph were bored.

GENERAL HOSPITAL was also interesting. Sonny should smack Carly for having sex with him and then demanding he relinquish all rights to Morgan. Carly has always been a manipulative cow and I am not liking her nowadays. Claudia and Nicolas interacting brought two mediocre storylines together to create something a bit more compelling. I hope there is some follow through on Nicolas learning that Claudia ordered the hit on Sonny.

After I woke up from a loooooooooong nap, the Employed Boyfriend and I watched AS THE WORLD TURNS, which is my favorite soap because no matter what is going on, there are always character moments that make me smile and applaud. Plus, ATWT has the best cast on daytime. Today, I love Margo asking Tom if he'd still love her when she's old and dumb and ugly . Ellen Dolan reels off lines like that as if they're improvs, and I love her for it!
The preview for tomorrow's show is very exciting. Col Mayer! Shocked Ameera! And even though the preview didn't show it, a kiss between Noah and Luke!

I think it's pretty much a given that tomorrow's ATWT will be gobs more exciting than the episode of GOSSIP GIRL I sampled tonight. I've never watched GG before, and while I will still be checking it out, I wanted to love this show instead of just being mildly entertained by it. I was inspired by the recent NEW YORK magazine cover story on GG to tune in and DVRed the repeat of the penultimate episode. The show is dramatically all out of whack. There was a major scene where Serena is supposed to confront the consequences of what she has done AND IT ALL HAPPENS OFF CAMERA. They couldn't hire a couple of actors and redress a set to stage a scene that is the dramatic crux of the episode, possibly the event that provides the entire backstory for the season? There is no excuse for shortchanging your drama by leaving out THE DRAMA.
Here's hoping the season finale is better. GG, you're getting a second chance.

TODAY ON AMC, DOOL and GH!

Managed to drag myself out of bed at 12:30 PM to catch the tail end of ALL MY CHILDREN while I made breakfast. Very happy to see a scene between Ricky Paull Goldin and Cady McClain; they are favorites of mine from GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS and were both treated badly by those shows. Let's hope AMC gives them a better deal.

Watched all of DAYS OF OUR LIVES and pretty much everything in today's episode is eclipsed by the haunting sight of Kayla's twitching, icky premature baby puppet! It was like something out of a David Cronenberg film! Granted, we only saw the thing for a second, but....yuck. Though my reaction may be extreme due to being a preemie myself. Maybe DOOL is tapping into some horrible primal birth memories that have lay dormant for 34 years??

My afternoon was finished with watching all of GENERAL HOSPITAL. I dip in and out of this show so I was shocked to have it begin with Jerry stabbing Claudia, holding a knife to her throat and dumping her in the river! Though that was not as bizarre as the final scene of today's episode, wherein a soggy Claudia washes up on Nicolas' front porch and is greeted by him as Emily! WTF??? I had to rewind my DVR thingy to make sure what was going on in that scene, it is quite confusing. Hey, maybe Natalia Livingstone should have played Claudia instead of Sarah Brown so that scene could make sense!

Speaking of Sarah Brown, I think she's doing what she can for the cartoonish character of Claudia. I wish she was given someone more realistic to play, like when she played Julia on ATWT, who was an ordinary woman who nonetheless managed to rip 2 couples apart. On a more positive note, I am loving Kate with Jax, and it was fun to see Tamlyn Tomita pop up as Giselle.

The only show I am completely invested in is ATWT, which I DVR every day to watch with the boyfriend when he comes home from work. (Yes, one of us is employed.) I'm hoping for an exciting preview for next week full of Nuke goodness!

I'M UNEMPLOYED. I WATCH SOAPS.

Ever since I was laid off in January 2007, sometimes the only thing getting me up in the morning is the knowledge that I have lovely soap operas to watch. This blog will chronicle my devoted, yet haphazard, soap viewing that takes place when I'm not searching for a job! Please join me on this journey of pleasure and pain!
